Mosgiel Millenium Clock, Dunedin, Otago

Mosgiel_Clock
This was a Rotary Mosgiel community project where all participants donated much effort and their time. When completed, the clock was gifted to the City at a ceremony attended by the then Mayoress, Sukki Turner, representatives of Rotary Club, Mosgiel and dignitaries.

Responsibility for maintenance was initially assumed by Property Section of the DCC but later was transferred to Parks & Gardens.

There were many amusing and probably "never to be told" little stories concerning the project construction progress. One which can be mentioned involved the clock unexpectedly stopping about a month after it had been commissioned. On investigation it was found that a tiny spider had climbed up inside the condensation drain hole in the bottom of the north face cover and had begun to spin a web between the number 6 digit and the clock outer cover. His plan was to feast off the flies which were attracted to the clock during the night when it was lighted internally. Unfortunately for the little fellow, the minutes hand swept through his web, destroying it once an hour on every half hour. Undaunted, he repaired the damage and continued building his web until the hand came around and again gathered up a portion of his web. Which he then duly repaired, until after a month there was a fist-sized ball of web caught around the end of the minutes hand finally big enough to stop the clock.

Installing_Temperature_Display
The original Jira design of 2001 included a realtime temperature display using lamps. Provision was made to future-upgrade this to long life super-bright LED clusters as the technology became affordable and this was finally done by Parks & Gardens contractors in 2006.
